~ 1776…To his wife Abigail, the day after Congress approved the Declaration, John Adams wrote two letters. The first was quite to the point and simply stated, with great joy the Declaration had been approved. The second was more lengthy and much more thoughtful over the historic document that he had just experienced the privilege of bringing to fruition. In it, Adams carefully noted: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great Anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp, shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward forever.”

Fast-forward through every decade since, and the generations to follow have celebrated the freedom of America with red, white and boom extravaganzas displayed on the skyline of every metropolitan city and across the countryside of every state to declare, “Yes to Freedom”.

We are a free nation, a free people, free to speak, free to write, free to worship, and free to experience life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This freedom has come at a great cost through wars at home and around the globe. This course toward freedom for all yielded much division through the years, inflicting deep wounds, which sometimes seemed irreparable.

But the truth of freedom and the promise of healing lies not in a declaration, nor in any government office of any nation, not in an Oval Office, a Chamber of Congress or in a court labeled Supreme, but in one word…Creator.

The God Most High is freedom. He is the giver of life, sustainer of life and sovereign hand over all of life. He is the true freedom of life and liberty. In the darkest days of injustice, when national freedom is threatened, or our Christian faith tested, we still know freedom because we know the God Almighty. He is our freedom song.

So this week, celebrate big the national freedom of America and celebrate even bigger the truth of the Gospel that sets us all free through Jesus.

“and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32
