“Mom, I need to tell you … Daniel’s not breathing on his own,” my oldest son, David gently informed me as I was rushing to the hospital.
My immediate thought was, “Well, he’ll start breathing.” Death could not be entertained.
“Remember Mom … God isn’t surprised by this,” David tenderly reminded me.
That truthful statement turned my anxious heart to grasping for my Father’s hand. “Aw, Yes, that’s true. I can trust Him.”
For four hours at the hospital we waited for tests. Family and friends packed the waiting rooms, caring, praying, waiting. Our Lord carried us as we learned to grieve.
Daniel Stephen Traugott has now been in heaven longer than he was on earth. July 2, 2002, at 13½ years old he departed in a car accident.
At age eleven, Daniel started writing worship songs including, Heaven. The Lord captured his tender heart at a young age. (To see Daniel singing two of his songs. Sung 1 month before heaven www.YouTube.com/HopeinSorrow)
At the end of the school year he had an English assignment to poetically describe himself in two places. Many kids wrote about going to the mall or being at the dentist. Daniel chose to described himself in heaven and hell.
I see the pearly gates of Heaven,
And the solid streets of gold.
I feel the peacefulness, joy and love
That comes in being with our dear Lord.
I taste the sweet, refreshing waters
From the ocean of delight.
I hear the laughter and the praises
That we lift up to our King.
In 2001, Randy Alcorn’s books and conference talks impacted my family. www.epm.org (Eternal Perspective Ministries)
Heaven became a real place. Creative and fun conversations flowed among us.
After Daniel’s departure to his eternal, real home, I called Randy Alcorn to thank him for his influence and we corresponded. One day, a surprise package came with a new autographed copy of Randy’s book, HEAVEN. Shouts of joy and tears flowed. Daniel’s name was in the dedication.
On my wall are high school graduation announcements to honor all my kids. Since Daniel skipped his high school graduation, I wrote:
Our Dear Daniel,
You are now in your real home … before our Lord’s throne … rejoicing and worshiping Him … without sin … seeing His glory and holiness … living in grace and truth … enjoying the saints as friends.
Daniel, you left us treasured memories and you were an exemplary example of godliness.
Even in your death you continue to give to us for our hearts have been penetrated with the reality of eternity.
We have been blessed with:
An envisage for eternity,
A passion for the gospel
An unclenching of this life, and
A hope that is enduring.
As your Mom, you have part of my heart in heaven with you. We love you, Daniel. We miss you and we excitedly anticipate our reunion!
Are you prepared for heaven?
