The air of peaceful excitement filled this exodus day. Years of heart-torn tears, emotional struggles, and wrestling through my own anger and bitterness preceded.

Today was not a hasty decision. Twenty-three years of marriage involved 3 separations, an intervention, and 5 amazing, loved children. This turbulent journey had passed through deep valleys while I clung to the only One who is peace Himself. Without a doubt I had given this marriage my all. A line had now, quietly and peacefully, been drawn in the sand.

On October 2, 2001, lives were being altered. Our children, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 21, embraced this day’s prayerfully calculated and thought out plan. A verse gripped tightly in my heart and mind, “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace.” Isaiah 55:12

The only one who didn’t know, the one whose life would soon be turned upside down, was my husband. A note, enveloped in peace and firmly rooted in God’s guidance, calmly explaining our departure, would be left on the table. We were moving for his sake too, although he may never see the validity of my actions.

Thirteen of my courageous, caring friends arrived at our home. Lists contained everyone’s focused tasks. Pre-selected closets, kitchen shelves, and furniture were to be packed while some remained. While some friends waited for the moving truck’s arrival, a few went with me to our future home. Then I received an unexpected call, “Your husband is here at the house and is calling the police.”stack-of-boxes

We were only permitted to take our clothes and school books. Thankfully, I had already stored some necessary items at a friend’s home.

As difficult as this day was, peace ruled.

PEACE

My greatest life challenge has been to wrestle with my own heart before God; to pour out my honest questions, my brokenness and my struggles before Him who is always present, always hearing, always loving.

Throughout these years some lessons I have learned have deepened my trust in Him:

He lovingly hears all the cries of our hearts when we pour our souls out to Him …

In the midst of sorrow, His joy can be intertwine  …

During difficult trials His steady peace guides  …

When confusion abounds His wisdom brings clarity …

Tangled knots of bitterness can be unwoven …

In darkness, His path of direction shines …

In the silence of the night, He hears and holds wept tears …

In the end, only His opinion matters, and out of our heart, life flows.

Whatever hardship, confusion, or sorrow you are facing, I know without a doubt He is the One you need.

Peace is a Person.

“For He Himself is our peace…” Ephesians 2:14
