Overwhelming poverty in the Dominican Republic has been a generational cycle that has created a dependency on outside resources to care for families stricken with hunger and homelessness. Our ministry partner, Esperanza International, focuses on root causes of poverty and works toward sustainable development that are community based. Their mission is to free children and their families from poverty through initiatives that generate income, education and health, restoring self-worth and dignity to those who have lost hope. Discovery teams will partner with Esperanza on home improvement projects, business development and medical outreach. Through each of these engagements, we focus on developing long term relationships with the local community. While we are there we will be working with an aftercare for trafficking victims, and doing leadership training and development, a bible school and community activity outreach. South Africa is a strikingly beautiful country that has been scarred by the unrelenting AIDS pandemic, overwhelming numbers of orphans and a great divide between those who have and those who don't. The deep poverty levels in South Africa seem to be a pit with no bottom. Yet the people of South Africa are as remarkably beautiful as her landscape. Such adversity has given rise to great Christ followers that lead some of the most vibrant and compelling ministries in world. And Discovery Church is privileged to work alongside two ministries that are making a significant difference for the kingdom of God on earth. The South Africa team will be working closely with Christian Life Center and Genesis Trust ministry, both located in the Durban area. Team engagement will include caring for orphans battling AIDS, youth in at-risk slum areas, hospice care for those in the late stages of AIDS, and business development training for local entrepreneurs.
