Issue: Abuse & Oppression                                                 Location:Guatemala                                                                                                                        

This team served one of our partner organizations, International Justice Mission, to help sound proof their offices. This had been expressed as a great need to be able to conduct business. IJM field operatives work tirelessly and under strained conditions to be an advocate and a voice to the abused and oppressed as well as prosecuting the oppressors. IJM's Guatemala office is located on a busy and noisy street. Developers, planners, construction workers, and just plain hard worker were needed!                                         

Issue: Education & Prevention                                 Location: Nazaret, Dominican Republic   

Continuation of our work with Mission Emanuel in Dominican and Haitian communities doing follow-up in their schools. This team specifically work edwith the teachers, holding teaching seminars and workshops. Many of the teachers there have received only minimal training and expressed a great desire for resouces, training for teaching children with special learning needs, and other methods that would further equip them in their ministry and work.

Follow up ministry with Apne Aap. Teaching English and conducting abuse prevention and counseling groups. The team will also continued work with the start-up business model, teaching the women. business principles and utilizing micro-funding.

Issue: Preventable Disease                                     Location: South Africa

This team partnered with Willow Creek Association Churches in South Africa to participate in late stage AIDS homecare as well as prison healthcare and education.

Long Term Serving: In addition to these short-term serving opportunities, we are looking for individuals interested in serving for 6 months to a year in the following organizations:

Mae Sai, Thailiand with the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities (DEPDC) - During your time here you will learn about the matters which lie at the heart of DEPDC and the work it does to combat the
trafficking of women and children into exploitative labor conditions and commercial sex work. You will gain an insight into how an NGO operates; learn about the socio-economic problems in Northern Thailand and the subsequent hardships faced by the lowland and hill tribe communities. You will also get the chance to develop close-knit friendships with the children, fellow volunteers and staff at DEPDC.  Students and volunteers from western countries who have not had previous exposure to Thai methods of thinking and operating may think that the ideas and ways of doing things here are quite strange. While adjusting to these differences is a challenge, it is also an opportunity to learn about the people, culture and yourself.  This internship will last 6 months or longer.

Kolkata, India with Apne Aap - Apne Aap Women Worldwide (A2W2) began as a community-based initiative of women in prostitution in the Khetwadi/ Kamatipura red light area of Mumbai in 1998. Twenty-two women in prostitution, who had worked with Emmy award-winning journalist Ruchira Gupta, to make a documentary “The Selling of Innocents,” decided to start this organization. The main objectives of this internship would be to support community based initiatives of those trapped by the sex industry, mitigate the circumstances of those caught in prostitution, develop leadership among the affected to end sex  trafficking, prevent inter-generational prostitution, and to build links between grassroots activism and policy makers on issues related to ending sex trafficking.  This internship will be individually constructed based on your gifts and skills sets and how Apne Aap can benefit and utilize those gifts.  The internship will last 6 months or more.
