Some of the smartest men I’ve known are the ones who have spent time behind the cold metal bars of a prison. They all possessed incredible talent, motivation and a deep love for their families with great potential to become better men.

Although the reasons they each ended up in prison varied, they all had one thing in common; a father who did not love them.

A father is supposed to protect and love, encourage and support.  When a young innocent boy at the age of seven gets shot by the blanks of his alcoholic father’s gun, his heart begins to break  from terror and rejection. When the same young boy is thrown onto his bed and punched in the face, because he didn’t clean his bike to perfection, his heart breaks from the pain.

As the boy becomes a teenager he has learned he must put up walls to protect himself. Whatever it takes, he will build his wall; drugs, alcohol, sex, violence. The years of physical and mental pain get buried deep inside his soul and his heart remains broken in pieces.

The young, innocent boy who used to have big dreams becomes trapped inside what is now a grown man; a grown man, with a broken heart and tattered soul.

This broken man was made in God’s image and he still longs to be loved and accepted. He longs to be known, seen and heard. His dreams are still there and he so desperately wants to let out the trapped innocent boy. So many men don’t know how.

This is the story of hundreds of men in prison. Their only hope is to turn to Jesus and let their perfect Father in Heaven heal their wounds. Many times, we as women try to rescue these men, when only God can. These men can never learn their masculinity from femininity. To learn who they truly are, they must submit to Christ and come into relationship with Him first.

Maybe you know one of these men as your husband, brother, friend or son. Will you stand with me in prayer and ask God to heal their hearts so they may know the protection, love and support from their Almighty Father? Let no man go unloved, for we are all created in the image of God.

“So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27
