Have you ever tried to sit in silence by yourself? Complete and total silence for 5, 10, maybe 15 minutes? It’s HARD! And in this world of non-stop stimulation, most of us are either too busy or just not willing to sit still.
So, when I was invited to a “Refresh with God” retreat, which required four hours of silence, I was terrified! This was the first time in my life I would be face to face and heart to heart with God, without any interruptions. At first, the idea of being able to refresh from work, kids, and errands sounded appealing, but the more I thought about it the more fearful I became.
Why would I want to sit in silence for four hours so I could hear God tell me all the things I was doing wrong? I had enough pressure in my life, I certainly didn’t want to hear how I was failing God. But, something kept tugging at my heart to go.
I arrived with my Bible and journal in hand, uneasy of a day I could never predict. We were encouraged to journal and pour our hearts out to God about whatever was on our mind. For 10 minutes, I frantically wrote, using up half the ink in my pen. The next 10 minutes, we were to write what we heard God saying to us.
Those precious 10 minutes would forever be etched in my heart as the catalyst to my love affair with Jesus.
The very first thing I heard Him say to me, was not, “What is your problem Darci?” and “You need to repent of your sins Darci!” His first words were, “I LOVE YOU.” And for the next 10 minutes He talked to me about how He was proud of me and how He wanted to be my partner in life. He talked to me about how He would bless my life beyond measure and how He would protect and comfort me.
The rest of the day, I spent in silence reading the Word and talking with a God who loved me more in one day than anyone on this earth has ever loved me in my lifetime.
So many of us have a distorted view of who God really is and we hide from Him because of it. If we would just take the time to sit in silence and hear His voice, we would experience His never ending unconditional love for us.
What is your view of God? Are you afraid of what He may say to you? I pray you will sit with Him and listen for His words of encouragement and love for you.
