Stephen Ministry is an arm of Discovery’s pastoral care the reaches out to comfort people facing life issues. It is Jesus helping people through people. Stephen Ministers are ordinary, non-professional people who have been through 50 hours of specific training to aid them in providing a presence to those people facing life issues allowing them to have a confidential and safe environment in which they can unburden themselves to an empathetic ear. Stephen Ministers meet once a week for about an hour to their care receiver to provide a presence; we do not try to “fix” a person’s situation but provide a welcoming environment where God has the opportunity to repair broken individuals. Potential care receivers include individuals who are:
- Hospitalized • Terminally Ill • New to the community • Grieving • Homebound • Experiencing a job crisis • Aging or elderly • Disabled • Need support of a friend • Facing a life transition • Coping with divorce • Expecting or adopting a child • Struggling with faith in God • Expecting loneliness
Stephen Ministers are available to talk with you, usually face to face, but Telecare is available, once a week. These meetings are an opportunity to share concerns, feelings, and find comfort in releasing emotions related to their crisis. As this is one on one, not a group environment, someone can be available to meet with you within 48 hours.
