Overview

Stephen Ministry is an arm of Discovery’s pastoral care the reaches out to comfort people facing life issues. It is Jesus helping people through people. Stephen Ministers are ordinary, non-professional people who have been through 50 hours of specific training to aid them in providing a presence to those people facing life issues allowing them to have a confidential and safe environment in which they can unburden themselves to an empathetic ear. Stephen Ministers meet once a week for about an hour to their care receiver to provide a presence; we do not try to “fix” a person’s situation but provide a welcoming environment where God has the opportunity to repair broken individuals. Potential care receivers include individuals who are:

  • Hospitalized • Terminally Ill • New to the community • Grieving • Homebound • Experiencing a job crisis • Aging or elderly • Disabled • Need support of a friend • Facing a life transition • Coping with divorce • Expecting or adopting a child • Struggling with faith in God • Expecting loneliness

Availability

Stephen Ministers are available to talk with you, usually face to face, but Telecare is available, once a week.  These meetings are an opportunity to share concerns, feelings, and find comfort in releasing emotions related to their crisis.  As this is one on one, not a group environment, someone can be available to meet with you within 48 hours.
